Chapter 27: Information Analysis and Synthesis

Information Analysis and Synthesis

Determine Space Needs
-1st Way
-Multiply the area one person needs by the total number of people in that same area.
Example.) Student - 15-20 sqft
                 Office Worker - 100-250sqft

-2nd Way
    - space needs are directly related to the occupancy
example.) mechanics vs the size of the car

-3rd Way
   - Built-in set of rules

Note- developed space needs in sqft is called NET AREA

Net Area does not include corridors, closets, toilet rooms, space for partitions.

Task and Activity Analysis

-Linear Work flow
-Centralized Work Flow
          -controlled from one center position
-Departmental Flow
         -hierarchy
-Network Work Flow
-No strict method of work flow

Code Analysis
-Developed a preliminary code check list.
example.) one or two means of egress

Accessibility
-widths of accessible routes, door sizes, and maneuvering clearances.

Typical Regulations and Rules
-rentable vs. useable sqft ratio
-building standard allowances
        - certain amount of $ or items is supplied by owner

Plan Arrangements
-Open configuration
-Linear Configuration or Concept
              -arrange space in a row
-Axial Concept or Configuration
-Align space with a significant fixture.
Centralized  Concept or Configuration
-Single dominant space with a secondary space surrounding it.
-Grid Concept or Configuration
           - Pattern
-Clustered Concept or configuration

Components of Interior Design
-Walls - 1st and most important plane
         -ceiling
          -floors
          -steps
          -doors
          -Glazing

Adjacency Matrix
3 Basic Types of Adjacency Needs
-People
-Products
-Information

Adjacency Diagrams or Bubble Diagrams
-Special types of Adjacency Diagrams
       -Stacking Diagram
-Used when a project is on more then one floor.

If a drawing is not available use a base plan.
-A base plan is the outline drawing (envelope)

Wet Columns
-Structural Columns with water supplied pipes.

Circulation Patterns
     -Important for Egress

3 Basic Patterns
-Dumbell Layout (simplest)

-A complete loop using this is known as the dough-nut configuration.

-Radial Layout- Central exit going to other locations

CODE RESTRICTIONS

-Practicum will require 2 exits.
NOTE- 2 exits must be separated at least 1/2 the distance of the diagonal distance of the space.

Corridor exit width - 36" Residential
44" Commercial
(48"-60" just to be on the safe side)

20' for dead end corridor.
Note- try to avoid dead end corridors.

Practicum- Draw the common path of egress and the travel distance
Min 18" on the pull side
Min 12" on the push side of a door

A good space plan recognizes the different levels of need for privacy
-Reception
-Conference
-Office
